WSOP: Bertrand Grospellier Captures Tournament of Champions Seat
Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier won the final seat into the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions after he outlasted eight of the world’s best poker players. The WSOP Academy played host to the single table “sudden-death playoff” tournament for nine players who were not eligible for the public voting to fill the final seat.
The single table tournament saw Andy Bloch, Bertrand “ElkY” Grospellier, Gus Hansen, Don Cheadle, Sorel Mizzi, Michael Mizrachi, Liv Boeree, Gavin Smith and Paul Wasicka battle it out for the single seat. But in the end it was the French poker pro Grospellier who emerged victorious. In the heads-up match he fought with Michael Mizrachi. Entering heads-up play, Mizrachi held a 2:1 edge in chips, 60,800 to Grospellier’s 29,200. Somehow the French player managed to double up and even up the counts at 45,000 apiece. The final confrontation saw Grospellier holding Ks-10c and Mizrachi Ah-6h. The board ran out 4c-5c-Qd-Kc-Jc and Grospellier earned a seat to the 2010 WSOP Tournament of Champions.
After the fantastic performance he declared: “I want to thank the WSOP Academy for giving me the chance to win my way into the TOC. I feel like I am a deserving champion based on my record around the world, and I look forward to getting my WSOP bracelet soon.”
In his poker career Grospellier obtained top notch results. In 2008 he won the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure. He got $2 million. He also took down the 2008 Festa Al Lago WPT event for $1.4 million and the 2009 PCA high-roller event for $433,500. From live tournament winnings he collected over $7 million.
The Tournament of Champions will feature 27 players and begin on June 27th. Then, the final nine will return to the Rio to play down to a winner on July 4th.
