Democrats, Republicans Split Over Ohio Casino Bill
The lawmakers who are preparing the rules for Ohio’s four new casinos are divided over how to spend $200 million for job-training programs.
The Democrats, who control the Ohio House, want the massive amount to be spent on four job-training programs. This includes Gov. Ted Strickland’s new program, which was announced earlier this year, intended to encourage companies in major cities to hire unemployed workers.
The Republicans, who control the Senate, because of the fact that the money from the license fees won’t arrive until 2011 they don’t want specific allocations written into the bill.
The money is expected to be obtained from one-time licenses charged to the casino operators. By Thursday the two sides must reach an agreement.
